Hello mature students!
My name is Chris Fry and I’m a fourth year student studying atmospheric science and meteorology here at York University. Welcome to my blog!
The decision to return to school is not one easily made. Like every other mature student, I returned to academic life with a shade of apprehension. First and foremost, I was leaving (temporarily) an exciting and dynamic career as a commercial pilot. Was I making the right decision? Would I miss the joy of my work? I had also been out of school for a long time. Were my skills up to par? How would I cope with the workload? These are just some of the concerns I felt in my return to school. All of us will undoubtedly face some challenges and concerns when making such a dramatic life decision. Apprehension is a very normal feeling, but it doesn’t make the process of navigating the labyrinth of university procedures any easier either.
Fortunately, I’ve had a lot of help along the way.
My support came from:
- Faculty Members
- Clubs/Student Organisations
- Other Mature Student Peers
- Family and Friends
This blog is my way of offering support to you. I’ll be using my own experience as a mature student to offer information and tidbits that I think would be useful to other mature students at York University, especially those just getting going on their degrees. Please comment, ask questions, and let me know what you’d like to hear. I’d be more than happy to help!

Hi Chris,
Thanks for sharing your story. I am also a mature student on campus and have had some of the same concerns. Glad to know I’m not the only one!
